Ethylene Production

Millions of tons of ethylene are produced each year, using a wide range of hydrocarbon feedstocks. It is typically used to produce the raw materials required for hundreds of well-known consumer and industrial products.

Most ethylene is produced by the thermal cracking of hydrocarbons in the presence of steam. The main products are ethylene and propylene, but methane and hydrogen are also produced.

High-purity ethylene is essential to the quality of its end products. To assure purity, accurate monitoring is required across the process. In addition, some impurities can affect process efficiency and operational safety.

We have extensive experience in providing reliable online process instrumentation for the analysis of key gas components in ethylene production facilities. Our laser-based analyzers provide the real-time results required, with no interference with the process.

    Moisture in olefins

As part of the production process, the gas stream is quenched with water before the olefins are separated from the saturated hydrocarbons. This means that there is the potential for moisture contamination of the olefins.

    Product purity

A range of impurities can be introduced to the gas stream during the ethylene production process. Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy can be used to identify and monitor the levels of these impurities, assuring final product quality.
