Refining

A refinery converts crude petroleum oil into useful end products. This requires safe operation and maximum process efficiency in order to optimize the quality and quantity of the final product.

Many processes take place within a refinery, including hydrocracking, hydrotreating, distillation and sulfur recovery. These operations require support from robust process analyzers.

Refinery operations can be used to process crude oil into fuels and other useful chemicals, including gasoline, petroleum, naphtha, diesel fuel, heating oil and kerosene. Real-time analysis is important for process control and safety.

With wide-ranging experience in refinery applications, we offer tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy instruments ideally suited to these process conditions. They offer high reliability and specificity, delivering significant savings compared to process gas chromatographs.

H2S in flare and refinery fuel gas

EPA regulations require the measurement of pre and post-combustion hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in multiple refinery gases to reduce environmental and safety impacts from refineries.

    Moisture in continuous catalyst regeneration

To ensure optimum product yield and catalyst life, it is essential to maintain a proper balance of moisture in the feedstocks. Measurement reliability is complicated by the presence of contaminants that impact sensors that measure moisture through direct contact.

    Moisture in hydrogen recycle gas

It is important to maintain the correct moisture balance in hydrogen recycle streams, in order to optimize product yield and catalyst life. The reformer process typically requires rapid, accurate results despite wide variations in moisture content.

    Combustion control

The key to combustion efficiency is to find the optimum ratio between air and fuel in the combustion reaction. This requires, at the minimum, accurate monitoring of oxygen, and also benefits from additional measurements: combustibles (for process optimization) and methane/hydrocarbon (for safety).
