Steel Production

Steel is produced from molten iron in a basic oxygen furnace, or by melting direct reduced iron in an electric arc furnace. The processes are based on the removal of carbon by oxidation.

Carbon is removed from the iron feedstock in the form of carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Measuring these oxides in the furnace off-gas is vital for process control.

Real-time gas analysis is essential for process control in these steelmaking techniques. Steel process gases will contain carbon oxides, oxygen, nitrogen, argon, water and residual metals, so a multi-component solution is required.

With wide-ranging experience in metals and mining applications, we offer a range of trusted measurement technologies to provide the best match to the application conditions. Our instruments offer high reliability and specificity, delivering process efficiency and fuel cost savings.

    Combustion control

The key to combustion efficiency is to find the optimum ratio between air and fuel in the combustion reaction. This requires, at the minimum, accurate monitoring of oxygen, and also benefits from additional measurements: combustibles (for process optimization) and methane/hydrocarbon (for safety).
